The Symptoms: When you first installed your brand-new solid state drive (SSD)—or purchased a modern ultraportable laptop with an SSD upgrade inside—you were amazed at how this new flash-powered storage device could launch and run your programs exponentially faster than a hard disk drive (HDD). But lately, you've noticed that copying large files, installing new programs, and completing Windows updates takes much longer.

The Cause: SSDs run slower over time with normal use. Traditional disk defragmentation methods designed for the mechanical moving parts of a hard disk drive, don't benefit SSDs—in fact, defragmentation harms SSDs and reduces their operable lifespan.
